Lane shifts on High Point Road

GREENSBORO, N.C. (WGHP) - Starting at 10:00 p.m. on Saturday May 14 there will be multiple lane shifts on High Point Road due to replacement of a sewer line if weather permits.

It is anticipated that the work should be completed by 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 15.  Motorists should expect delays when traveling in this area.

Airport Road Named After Former Director

The road that leads from Bryan Boulevard to the Piedmont Triad International Airport terminal building has been named after Ted Johnson.

Johnson was the airport’s longtime former executive director and retired last fall.

The Piedmont Triad Airport Authority voted Tuesday at its monthly meeting to rename the road after him.

The road will now be called Ted Johnson Parkway.

It had previously been called Airport Parkway and Triad Boulevard.

Road signs with the new name should go up in the next few weeks.

“We appreciate Ted Johnson’s service to this airport,” said Henry Isaacson, the Authority Chairman, according to a press release.

Happy Easter: NCDOT delays road construction

The N.C. Department of Transportation is taking steps to help motorists save both time and money this Easter by suspending most road construction activities on major routes across the state. By avoiding traffic delays, motorists can reach their destinations more quickly while also cutting down on fuel consumption and costs.

Most construction projects along interstate, N.C. and U.S. routes will be suspended beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 21, until 9:00 a.m., Monday, April 25, with two exceptions:

  • U.S. 17 in Windsor (Bertie County) is reduced to one lane on the Cashie River Bridge due to construction. Traffic is controlled by signals; however, commercial trucks are restricted on this route and detour signs are in place. All motorists are encouraged to use the U.S.

Volvo Trucks to Recall Workers and Boost Production at Va. Plant

Greensboro-based Volvo Trucks announced it will boost production and recall 700 workers at its New River Valley plant in Dublin, Va, according to the Greensboro News & Record.

Company officials said the move is designed to meet increased demand, the paper reported.

“Customer response to our products — particularly the fuel-efficiency and performance of Volvo’s new near-zero emission engines — continues to be extremely positive,” said Ron Huibers, senior vice president of sales and marketing, according to the paper.

The increase will occur in several stages between May 2 and June 13. Current employment at the plant is just under 1,500, according to the Greensboro News & Record.

Train Speeds to be Increased March 21

Norfolk Southern Railway will increase maximum train speeds at eight highway/rail grade crossings in Randleman and Asheboro in Randolph County starting March 21.

The railway is increasing its speed to improve efficiency and safety, according to a press release.

The crossings affected are on the line that runs between High Point and Asheboro.

Speeds will increase from nine to 25 mph where tracks cross Stout Road, State Route 2270, Wesleyan Road, Commerce Place, Pineview Street, Rock Quarry Road, Spero Road, Balfour Road and Bailey Street.

Track and signal improvements have been made to allow for the increases in train speeds. Two trains a day travel along the line.

This measure aims to improve public traffic flow and grade crossing safety by increasing train traffic fluidity through the area, according to a press release.

Crown Acura Of Greensboro Receives Dealership Award

Crown Acura of Greensboro has been awarded Acura’s most prestigious honor – the Dealership of Distinction award, according to a press release.

The dealership is among 103 Acura dealerships in the United States to meet or exceed the 2010 standards to qualify for the award, the release stated.

“We are so pleased to receive this award for the 10th time,” said Dan Clara, general manager of Crown Acura of Greensboro, according to the press release.

The Dealership of Distinction award was established in 1991 by American Honda Motor Co., Inc. to recognize dealerships serve as an example of the brand's values, according to the press release.

Two Lanes on I-40 West in Greensboro Will be Closed Sunday

The N.C. Department of Transportation will close two lanes on I-40 West in Greensboro from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday for bridge work, according to a press release

It states that one lane will be closed at the Boulder Road Bridge that crosses I-40. A second lane will be closed at the Gallimore Dairy Road exit ramp to I-40 West.

Weather conditions could impact the timing of the closures, the press release states.

Changeable message boards will be posted along the interstate to direct traffic while the bridge work is under way.
