OAK RIDGE,  N.C. — A teenage girl from Winston-Salem was killed and several others were seriously injured in a head-on crash Wednesday night in Oak Ridge.

Courtney Nixon, 19, died in the two-car crash, which happened on Linville Road near Hollow River Drive shortly after 6 p.m., according to Trooper Greg Ingram.  Four others were transported to hospitals, he said.

Ingram said the wreck happened when Nixon’s boyfriend, Brent Griffith, 20, of Winston-Salem, drove his 2000 Honda Civic off the right side of the road, over-corrected and crashed into an oncoming Dodge pickup truck.

Nixon was riding in the front-passenger seat of the Civic.

Griffith was still in critical condition at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center as of 6 p.m. Thursday, Ingram said.

Charles Deitz, 21, of Kernersville, who was riding in the back seat of the Civic, has been upgraded to good condition at Moses Cone.

The driver of the pickup, Ronnie Nelson, 47, of Oak Ridge, and his passenger, Lindsey Nelson, 11, were both treated and released from Moses Cone Hospital.

Nobody in the Civic was wearing a seat belt, while everyone in the pickup was, Ingram said.

The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed.

Speed was a factor in the wreck, Ingram said. The speed limit on the narrow stretch of roadway is 45 mph.

Courtney Nixon’s father, Bill Nixon, visited the scene of the wreck Thursday afternoon. While troopers said there is no indication alcohol was a factor in the crash, Nixon said he found some empty bottles under the seats of the car.

Bill Nixon said he hopes that, when other teens see the pictures, they’ll consider it a lesson.

Nixon said he had been crying all day and hasn’t had any sleep.

“It’s very tough on us, because I’ve always tried to instill in my daughter that you need to just do what’s right, and evidently they weren’t, so now everybody’s paying the price for it,” Bill Nixon said.

Bill Nixon said his daughter had the biggest heart in the world and loved life.
